Let’s face it, Summer 2020 is going to go down in history! It’s unlikely many of us will be able to leave the country so we’ve put together a STAY-cation series to help you find the best places in the UK to get away for some kind of break this summer.
Type of Staycation: City Break
Best places to stay:
If you're looking to stay pretty local and central I would recommend staying at either the Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel or Apex Grassmarket Hotel. Both have great views of Edinburgh Castle with Edinburgh’s famous historical Victoria St (pictured above) just a minutes walk away. Also, if you’re driving, they also have parking which is a rarity for a hotel in the Old Town.
If you're working on a budget, the city has plenty of great hostels that I would thoroughly recommend checking out!
Things to do:
On a fair-weather day, without doubt, I recommend the climb to Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park. It’s really a must-see view of the city, providing you are fit and well! From the foot of the climb to the summit, it takes about an hour with the descent taking around 45 minutes.
With great views of the city, you might like to venture to Edinburgh Castle. If you’re on a budget I’d skip this part and just have a little wonder around the entrance, where you still get to see the great views of the city.
The Royal Mile
Starting from the Edinburgh Castle and ending at Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile is a real must-see and almost makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. Filled with nostalgia and lots of Scotland theme souvenir shops it really gives you a feel of the old city.
Bars and nightlife
Three Sisters in Cowgate (also tied to Edinburgh Napier University Union) is a must-visit. As well as the indoor pub, it has a festival vibe with the outdoor bars and large screens playing sports. This is the place to be on a summers evening with a cold cider in hand.
Stramash, located a bit further down the street from the Three Sisters is a renovated church with a variety of live music and sports. Check on their website for when they open!
We also love The Piper's Rest on Hunter Square, great service and loads of gin choices!
Edinburgh Gin Distillery
If you're anything like me and love Gin then make sure you take part in the Edinburgh Gin Distillery Tour. You MUST book in advance for a spot on one of their tours, if you’re heading there on a weekend they are usually booked up for a couple of months, so check before you go!
3 fun facts about Edinburgh:
1. Edinburgh Castle is built on an extinct volcano!
2. Edinburgh was the first city in the entire world to have it's own fire service - you're in safe hands!
3. J.K. Rowling wrote some of Harry Potter in an Edinburgh café (The Elephant) and took inspiration from the landscape for her characters and locations.
