Out Of The Ordinary Careers To Start In Your Twenties

Every year, new jobs and career paths pop up out of the blue that your granny would never have dreamt of. That said, not everyone is destined to be a YouTuber or Tik Tok creator. If that’s not really your thing, in this blog we give you 5 out of the ordinary careers you could embark on in your twenties and beyond!

1. Food stylist

Have you ever seen a roast dinner (or nut roast) on a TV ad and thought: “I could reach through the screen and inhale that meal RIGHT NOW?”

That magic has likely been created by a food stylist; in charge of making sure the food on the plate looks to die for. It’s also common for food stylists to have experience in photography and might even be a bit of a chef themselves, so if you’re a foodie who knows how to take a great photo, this could be the career for you.

2. Doula

If you’re great with babies and have the ability to keep others calm in high-pressure situations, a career as a doula could be your calling. The day-to-day activities of a doula don’t require a midwifery degree but you would still need to go through childbirth education, breastfeeding and birth doula classes, as well as attend numerous births.

There are two main types of doulas: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. As a birth doula, you could help a new mum with the development of her birth plan and provide emotional support in labour; whilst a postpartum doula conducts home visits and offers encouragement and advice.

3. Virtual Assistant

If you’ve got a knack for all things organisation and an eye for detail, a career as a virtual assistant could be for you. Help small and large businesses with their social media or their customer service, all from the comfort of your own home – or from a co-working space in another country! You could eventually hire your own staff and start your own VA business – the opportunities are endless.

4. Voice-Over Artist

Have you ever dreamed of becoming the next Iain Stirling? If you have a great voice, you can give this a go. Voice-over work involves dubbing for television and audio productions. A career as a voice-over artist may not see you following a traditional path, as a degree in broadcasting is not necessarily needed. You could find yourself working as a voice-over artist as an expert within your current field.

To succeed in this industry, confidence, consistency and putting yourself out there are all must-have qualities. You can get started by listing your skills on a website such as Fiverr or Upwork and freelancing for smaller gigs before you build up to a full-time career.

5. Motion Graphic Designer

Motion graphics designers, sometimes just called motion designers, create artwork for web, television or film. This could include movie clips, trailers, commercials, title sequences, etc. They use visual effects, animation and other cinematic techniques to bring life to their creations. With the rise of video apps such as TikTok, the need for good video editors and motion graphic designers who can bring stories to life is vastly increasing!
